2026 World Cup Group Stage: Format, Teams and Schedule

The FIFA World Cup 2026 brings a revolutionary format change: for the first time in history, 48 national teams are split into 12 groups of 4 teams (Groups A–L). That is 50% more participants than WC 2018 and 2022. Honestly, this one change transformed everything: the door is now open to nations that have never reached the final stage before, and every single group-stage match becomes genuinely unpredictable.

How the WC 2026 Group Stage Works

In each of the 12 groups, teams play a round-robin: 6 matches per group, 3 per team. Win earns 3 points, a draw 1 point, a loss 0 points.

The top 2 teams from each group advance directly to the Round of 32, 24 teams in total. Another 8 spots go to the best third-placed teams from all 12 groups, ranked by points, goal difference, goals scored and so on. In total, 32 teams enter the knockout stage.

Worth noting: third place is far from eliminated. A team in that position can still go through if their result is good enough against all other third-placed finishers across the tournament. That tension makes every last group match genuinely meaningful.

WC 2026 Groups by Confederation

FIFA assigned groups based on seeding and confederation representation rules: no group may contain more than one CONMEBOL team or more than two UEFA teams (excluding the hosts). Interesting detail: this rule is exactly why every group is a genuine mix of styles, with teams from Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, CONCACAF and Oceania all sharing a table.
