This is the schedule of a tournament football has never seen before. Honestly, the numbers alone are staggering: 104 matches in 39 days (a record), 48 nations (a record), three host countries at once (for the first time ever). Every row in this table holds a match that could become legend: someone's debut on the biggest stage in the world, someone's last shot at the trophy, someone's goal that people will talk about for decades. You can watch every single one of them, free, live.

Key Matches to Watch in the WC 2026 Schedule

Nearly three matches a day, following everything is impossible. But some windows are where everything happens at once:

  • June 11–17: favourites open. First matches for the big sides, and almost every World Cup the first giant falls here. Germany went out in the group stage in 2018, Argentina lost to Saudi Arabia in 2022. Matchday one is also traditionally the highest-scoring: teams play open football before the pressure to grind results sets in
  • June 23–26: third matchday. The most intense days of the group stage: all matches within each group kick off simultaneously, making back-room deals impossible. At WC 2022 Japan beat Spain to finish top; at WC 2018 South Korea eliminated Germany. The third matchday rewrites every group, every time
  • June 28 – July 3: Round of 32. 16 knockout matches, zero second chances. Spain went out here in 2018, Portugal in 2022. Worth noting: this round has long stopped being a formality for any favourite
  • July 14–15: semi-finals. The France–Belgium semi in 2018 drew more viewers than the final itself. These matches carry more tension than most finals and tend to stay in people's memories longest
  • July 19: the Final. MetLife Stadium, New Jersey. The WC 2022 final became the most-watched live streaming event in sports history. The main match of the four-year cycle

Patterns That Repeat at Every World Cup

Every tournament is different, but some things stay constant. Interesting detail: champions almost never defend their title. Only Italy (1934+1938), Brazil (1958+1962) and France (1998+2002) have ever managed it. Argentina heads into 2026 going against that record.

Matchday one is reliably the most open and high-scoring: teams have not yet shut up shop. But in the knockout rounds, roughly one in two Round of 32 matches goes to extra time or penalties, so plan accordingly. To be fair, the biggest change of 2026 makes every group matter more: with 8 of the 12 best third-placed teams advancing, no group is settled until the final whistle of the final match.

Key Dates of the 2026 World Cup

  • June 11, 2026: Opening ceremony and first group stage matches of WC 2026
  • June 11–26, 2026: Group stage, 72 matches in 12 groups
  • June 28 – July 3, 2026: Round of 32, 16 knockout matches
  • July 5–8, 2026: Quarter-finals
  • July 14–15, 2026: Semi-finals
  • July 18, 2026: Third-place match
  • July 19, 2026: WC 2026 Final, MetLife Stadium, New Jersey

Group Stage Format

Twelve groups of 4 teams. Each team plays 3 matches: Win = 3 pts, Draw = 1 pt, Loss = 0 pts. The top 2 from each group advance directly to the Round of 32 (24 teams). The 8 best third-placed teams across all 12 groups also qualify, giving 32 teams in the knockout rounds.

Third place is far from eliminated: teams in that position know their result could still send them through if it is good enough compared to other third-placed finishers. That tension drives some of the best football of the entire group stage.

Knockout Stage: Round of 32 to Final

From June 28 onwards, single-elimination takes over. No draws: if level after 90 minutes, extra time (2×15 min) then penalties. Practical tip: the Final is July 19 at MetLife Stadium, capacity 82,500, just 13 miles from Manhattan. Book your viewing spot early.
