Reading the Brasileirão table
Twenty clubs, 38 rounds, and four relegated rather than three. That single difference changes the whole shape of the season: the relegation fight involves a fifth of the division and stays alive into the final round more often than in Europe.
The league runs across the calendar year rather than across two, starting in January and finishing in December, which is why the season here is labelled by a single year.
Why the table moves so much
Brazilian clubs play state championships, domestic cups and continental competition alongside the league, and the fixture load falls unevenly. A club deep in the Copa Libertadores will play a Série A round with a rotated side. Positions in June say less here than they would in a European league at the same stage.
