Reading the round

The German round opens on Friday night and its centrepiece is the Saturday afternoon block, five or six matches kicking off together. Following one club through it means missing the others, which is why German television built an entire format around the round-up show.

Form here counts only finished matches, so a club with a game in hand looks worse than it is. Home and away records matter more than they look in a league this early: two home wins from two says less about a club than the same two results in November will.

Betting on this round

We do not publish odds. Prices move through the week and a number printed on a page is out of date by the time anyone reads it, so what follows is the shape of the round rather than a set of figures.

The fixtures worth a second look are the ones where the table and the form disagree: a club sitting high after a soft opening, or one near the bottom that has played the two hardest away games available. Both get priced on position, and position this early is mostly a function of who they have already faced.
