Porto are the holders, their 31st Portuguese title. The league has been a closed shop for a century: Porto, Benfica and Sporting have taken all but two championships in its history, and no fourth club has won it since Belenenses in 1946.
Eighteen clubs and 34 rounds. What makes the division worth following is less the title race than the players passing through it. Portugal has been the most reliable route into the bigger leagues for South American talent for thirty years.
The clubs to know
Porto are the holders with 31 titles. Benfica have the largest membership of any football club in the world and the greater European history, two European Cups in the early 1960s. Sporting complete the three that have taken the championship in all but two seasons since the league began; no fourth club has won it since Belenenses in 1946.
O Clássico between Porto and Benfica is the fixture that decides most titles. The Lisbon derby between Benfica and Sporting is the one with the sharper edge. Braga are the most consistent of the rest and the club most likely to break into the European places.
What makes the Primeira Liga different
It is the most reliable route into the bigger leagues for South American talent, and has been for thirty years. Clubs below the top three operate as trading operations by design: buy from Brazil or Argentina, develop, sell to England or Spain. A side can finish fifth, sell its two best players in July and finish fifth again with a squad that looks nothing alike.
That makes last season's form a poor guide to this one and gives the division a rhythm no other league on this site has. The fixtures worth watching are often the ones with an unfamiliar nineteen-year-old in them.
