Eighteen clubs and thirty-four rounds, the shortest season of the major leagues. Sixteenth place plays off against the second division rather than going down automatically.
What each position is worth
The top four qualify for the Champions League, fifth for the Europa League and sixth for the Conference League, with the DFB-Pokal winner taking a Europa League place that moves the league places down when it has qualified already.
Relegation works differently here. Seventeenth and eighteenth go down outright, and sixteenth plays a two-legged relegation play-off against the club that finished third in the 2. Bundesliga. Sixteenth place is therefore survivable, and the play-off has gone the second division's way often enough that no one treats it as a formality. Paderborn came up through it this summer, beating Wolfsburg.
How ties are broken
Goal difference first, then goals scored, then head-to-head. Germany uses the same order as England rather than the Spanish and Italian one.
With 34 rounds rather than 38, every result carries more weight than it would elsewhere. A four-match losing run in Germany takes the same bite out of a season as five would in England, which is worth remembering when a table looks alarming in November.
