The Primeira Liga has one of the largest overseas audiences of any mid-sized European league, for a reason that has nothing to do with the standard of play: the Portuguese diaspora. Porto, Benfica and Sporting have supporter bases across France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Brazil and North America, and the rights are sold with that in mind.
Porto are the holders, their 31st title. Those three clubs have won the championship in all but two seasons in its history, which is the most closed top of any league on this site.

Three clubs, and everyone else selling
The competitive question in Portugal is not who wins but which of the three does, and how the clubs beneath them do their real business. Braga, Vitória and the rest operate as trading operations: buy from South America, develop, sell to a bigger league.
That gives the division a particular rhythm. A club can finish fifth, sell its two best players in July, and finish fifth again with a squad that looks nothing alike. Following the Primeira Liga means following a conveyor belt as much as a league table, and the fixtures worth watching are often the ones with an unfamiliar nineteen-year-old in them.

Porto, Benfica and Sporting have won the title in all but two seasons in the league's history, and no fourth club has taken it since 1946. That produces the shortest outright prices in European football and a division where the three of them are heavy favourites in almost every match.
Where the market gets interesting is beneath them. Clubs below the top three run as trading operations, selling their best players every summer, so squads change more between seasons than in any comparable league. Form from last season is a poor guide to this one, which is exactly the kind of gap where prices lag reality in the opening months.
