The 2026-27 season

Bayern Munich arrive as champions again. The 2025-26 title was their 34th Bundesliga championship and 35th German title overall, a record that has no parallel among the major European leagues. Any season here starts with the question of who might interrupt them.

The promotions produced one of the better stories of the German summer. Schalke came up as second-division champions and return a club whose average attendance would place them near the top of most leagues in Europe. Paderborn won the promotion play-off against Wolfsburg and are back after six years. Elversberg finished second in the 2. Bundesliga and reach the top flight for the first time in their history, a village club from Saarland with a stadium that holds a fraction of what Schalke fill every fortnight.

How the season works

The season opened on 28 August and closes on 22 May, with a winter break of several weeks that England does not take. German clubs come back in January having had a fortnight off while English squads played through Christmas, and the second half of the season is played at a different tempo because of it.

One habit worth picking up: the Saturday afternoon block puts five or six matches on at once, and German television built the Konferenz format around it, cutting between grounds as goals go in. Following a single club through that block means missing everything else happening at the same moment.

The clubs to know

Bayern Munich have 34 Bundesliga titles and 35 German championships in all, a record with no parallel in the major leagues. Borussia Dortmund are the most consistent challenger and the fixture between them, Der Klassiker, is the one the league sells abroad. Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt make up the group competing for European places.

Schalke return this season from the second division, a club whose average attendance would place it near the top of most leagues in Europe. Elversberg, a village side from Saarland, reach the top flight for the first time in their history. The Revierderby between Schalke and Dortmund is back on the calendar with them.

What 50+1 buys

German clubs must keep a majority of their voting rights with their members, which blocks the outside takeovers that reshaped English and Spanish football. Supporters own the vote, and they use it on the thing supporters care about most.

A Bundesliga ticket averaged 30.77 euros last season. A standing ticket averaged 12.27. Dortmund's Sudtribune holds 24,454 people on their feet, the largest single terrace in European football, and a place on it costs less than a round of drinks. English grounds removed their terraces after Hillsborough and have only recently begun licensing safe standing again in small numbers.

The crowds are large without being the largest. Germany averaged 34,974 a match in 2025-26, a record for its top two divisions and ahead of Spain on 30,945 and Italy on 30,084, though behind the Premier League on 41,663. England fills bigger grounds. Germany fills them cheaper, and on television the difference in noise is obvious.

The most goals in Europe

The Bundesliga produced 990 goals in 306 matches last season, an average of 3.24 a game. That is the highest of the major leagues, a shade above the Eredivisie on 3.18 and well clear of England on 2.75, Spain on 2.69 and Italy on 2.43. Over a season, a German fixture is worth roughly four fifths of a goal more than an Italian one.

The short season sharpens everything else. Thirty-four rounds is four fewer than England, Spain and Italy play, so a run of four defeats takes the same bite out of a German season as five would elsewhere, and a table that looks alarming in November has less time left to correct itself.
