Paris Saint-Germain arrive as champions again. The 2025-26 title was their fifth in a row and fourteenth overall, sealed in the middle of May with time to spare. No French club has ever put together a run of dominance like it, and the interesting question each August is which side finishes closest.

The clubs to know
Paris Saint-Germain have won the last five titles and fourteen in total, a run of dominance no French club has managed before. Marseille remain the only French side to have won the European Cup and carry the fiercest support in the country; Le Classique between the two is the fixture that stops the league.
Monaco, Lyon and Lille make up the group competing for European places. Lyon won seven consecutive titles in the 2000s, which is worth remembering when the current table makes PSG look permanent. Below them, clubs such as Rennes, Nice and Lens have built squads on the transfer market rather than on budget.
What makes Ligue 1 different
It develops and sells more elite young players than any league in Europe. A Ligue 1 season is where you see them before the transfer that makes them expensive, and the division has produced a disproportionate share of the players who define the bigger leagues a few years later.
The format changed in 2023 when France cut the division from twenty clubs to eighteen, giving sides more room for European fixtures. Thirty-four rounds rather than 38 compresses everything: fewer chances to recover from a bad run, and both relegation and European qualification decided across a shorter sample.
