Where it is being played
Four countries are hosting between them: England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland. Fifty-one matches are spread across nine grounds in eight cities, which is a smaller footprint than Euro 2024 used in Germany and a much shorter set of journeys for travelling supporters.
London has two of the nine. Wembley Stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium are joined by the Manchester City Stadium, Everton Stadium in Liverpool, St James' Park in Newcastle and Villa Park in Birmingham, with the National Stadium of Wales in Cardiff, Hampden Park in Glasgow and the Dublin Arena completing the list.
The matches already fixed to a venue
The tournament opens in Cardiff on Friday 9 June 2028 with a Group A match, and finishes at Wembley on Sunday 9 July. Wembley also takes both semi-finals and one quarter-final; the other three quarter-finals go to Dublin, Glasgow and Cardiff.
Each venue stages at least two different groups, which is a deliberate choice: rather than tying one city to one set of teams for a fortnight, UEFA has spread the draw so local crowds see a variety of sides. Each group also has a designated group head playing its three matches at pre-selected grounds.
How teams qualify
The qualifying draw takes place in Belfast on Sunday 6 December 2026. Teams go into twelve groups of four or five and play each other home and away, with the group stage running from March 2027 to November 2027. The twelve group winners and the eight best runners-up qualify directly, and the remaining places are settled after that.
The unusual part is what happens to the hosts. England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland all enter qualifying, drawn into separate groups, rather than being handed places for staging the tournament. Three of the four will have to earn their way into a competition they are putting on, which is not how hosting normally works and gives the qualifying campaign a tension it would not otherwise have.
What is not known yet
Everything that depends on the draw. Which teams qualify, who plays whom, the group composition and the fixture list are all decided from December 2026 onwards, and the tournament draw itself comes after qualifying finishes in late 2027.
