What each position is worth
Four Champions League places, one Europa League place at fifth and a Conference League place at sixth, with the Coppa Italia winner entering the Europa League and pushing the league places down when it has already qualified.
The bottom three go to Serie B. Italy has no relegation play-off in the top flight, though Serie B decides its own final promotion place that way, which is how Monza came up this summer.
How ties are broken
Head-to-head record first, as in Spain, then goal difference. Italy goes further than anywhere else at the very top: two clubs finishing level on points for the title play a one-off match to decide it rather than settling it on goals.
Because Serie A produces fewer goals than the other major leagues, goal difference separates fewer clubs here, and the head-to-head rule ends up deciding more positions than it does in Spain.
