Reading the Ligue 1 table
Eighteen clubs, 34 rounds, and goal difference separating clubs level on points. France cut the division from twenty in 2023 to give its clubs more room for European fixtures, so points totals here sit lower than in England or Spain without meaning anything different. Four fewer matches also means four fewer chances to fix a bad month.
The places carry more than usual. The top four go to the Champions League, fifth to the Europa League and sixth to the Conference League, and the winner of the Coupe de France takes a Europa League place on top. In a division of eighteen, six European places means a third of the league finishes the season with something to play for.
Read the top of the table knowing the money behind it. Paris Saint-Germain operate on a budget the rest of the division cannot approach, which is why the contest most clubs are actually in starts at second.
