The 2026-27 season

Inter are the holders. They took the 2025-26 Scudetto with three matches to spare on 3 May, the club's 21st Italian title. Juventus remain well clear at the top of the all-time table on 36, a figure that includes two won before Serie A took its current form in 1929.

All three promoted clubs are returning immediately. Venezia won Serie B, Frosinone finished second, and Monza came up through the play-off final against Catanzaro. Each of them went down at the end of 2024-25 and each came straight back, which is unusual for one club in a season and rare for three. They replace Cremonese, Hellas Verona and Pisa.

How the season works

Twenty clubs over 38 rounds. Clubs level on points are separated on their head-to-head record before goal difference, as in Spain. Where two clubs finish level on points at the top, Italy settles the title with a play-off match rather than on goal difference.

Positions one to four take Champions League places, fifth goes to the Europa League and sixth to the Conference League. The bottom three are relegated to Serie B. Italian scorelines run lower than the other major leagues, so goal difference separates fewer clubs here than the format suggests it should.
