The 2026-27 season

Inter are the holders. They took the 2025-26 Scudetto with three matches to spare on 3 May, the club's 21st Italian title. Juventus remain well clear at the top of the all-time table on 36, a figure that includes two won before Serie A took its current form in 1929.

All three promoted clubs are returning immediately. Venezia won Serie B, Frosinone finished second, and Monza came up through the play-off final against Catanzaro. Each of them went down at the end of 2024-25 and each came straight back, which is unusual for one club in a season and rare for three. They replace Cremonese, Hellas Verona and Pisa.

How the season works

Twenty clubs, 38 rounds, from 23 August to 30 May, with a winter break of a couple of weeks around the new year that England does not take. The break falls where the English programme is heaviest, so a Serie A squad arrives in February fresher than a Premier League one and the second half of the Italian season is played at a higher tempo than the first.

Promoted clubs struggle here more than the bare table suggests. Italian sides defend in structures that take a season to learn, and a squad arriving from Serie B usually spends the autumn learning them in public.

The clubs to know

Juventus lead the all-time list with 36 titles, two of them won before Serie A took its current form in 1929. Inter are second on 21 and hold the current Scudetto, won last season with three rounds to spare. Milan, Napoli and Roma make up the rest of the group that expects to compete.

The Derby della Madonnina between Milan and Inter is played in the same stadium by both clubs, which no other major rivalry manages. The Derby d'Italia, Juventus against Inter, carries a century of argument behind it. Venezia, Frosinone and Monza came up this summer, all three returning at the first attempt after going down together.

The hardest league in Europe to score in

Serie A produced 922 goals in 380 matches last season, an average of 2.43 a game. That is the lowest of the major leagues by a distance: England managed 2.75, Spain 2.69, the Netherlands 3.18 and Germany 3.24. Three quarters of a goal a match separates an Italian fixture from a German one, which over a season is the difference between watching 92 goals and 123.

Italian sides defend as organised units, and a match can turn on one moment after an hour in which very little appears to happen. That has a consequence for how you watch: the highlights package misleads here in a way it does not for the Premier League, because the part that decided the match was usually the part with no shot in it.

It also changes the arithmetic of the table. With so few goals, goal difference separates fewer clubs than the format expects, which is why the head-to-head rule ends up deciding more Italian positions than Spanish ones.

Why the clubs are poorer than the history suggests

Italian clubs mostly do not own the grounds they play in. Municipalities do, a legacy of the stadiums built and rebuilt for the 1990 World Cup, and it caps what a club can earn on a matchday. No naming rights to sell, no hospitality to build, and a renovation that takes years to clear because it needs the council rather than the board.

The largest example changed hands in November. Milan and Inter bought San Siro and the land around it from the city for 197 million euros, ending an arrangement that had stood since 1947, and plan to replace it with a 71,500-seat ground in time for the 2032 European Championship that Italy will co-host with Turkey. It is the first serious attempt to fix the problem at the top of the league.

This matters for what you see on the pitch. Matchday income below the English, Spanish and German level means smaller transfer budgets, and smaller budgets are part of why Italian football is coached the way it is. The defending is a choice, but it is also an adaptation.
