Eighteen clubs, 34 rounds, and the highest scoring of the major European leagues.

Reading the Eredivisie table

Eighteen clubs, 34 rounds, three points a win and goal difference as the first tiebreaker. Four fewer rounds than England or Spain means a bad month costs more here, with less season left to fix it.

Goal difference moves faster in this table than in any other on this site. Dutch sides attack; the arithmetic follows. A club can climb three places on one afternoon, and a mid-table position in October rarely survives to December.

The places at the top are worth wildly different things. The champions go straight into the Champions League league phase. The runners-up start in its qualifying rounds, where one bad night in August ends the European season before it begins. Third place and the winner of the domestic European play-off enter Europa League and Conference League qualifying, and the KNVB Cup winner takes a Europa League place. Finish first and you are guaranteed eight European matches. Finish second and you might get two.
