UEFA Euro 2024

Euro 2024 was played across ten German cities in June and July 2024. Twenty-four teams were drawn into six groups of four; the top two from each group advanced along with the four best third-placed teams, making a round of 16 and a straight knockout from there.

Spain won it, beating England 2-1 in the final in Berlin, and did so without dropping a match at any stage.

The knockout rounds

Single matches from the round of 16 onwards, extra time and penalties where needed. There is no third-place play-off at the European Championship, so the losing semi-finalists go home with nothing further to play for.

How Euro 2024 was decided

Spain beat England 2-1 in the final in Berlin on 14 July 2024, and did it without losing a match at any stage of the tournament. Seven matches, seven results, which no side had managed at a European Championship since the competition expanded.

England reached a second consecutive final and lost it, having come through a knockout run that included two matches decided in extra time. The pattern of their tournament, unconvincing in the group stage and durable in the knockouts, was the opposite of Spain's.

A record fourth title

The win put Spain clear at the top of the European Championship's honours list. Four titles, in 1964, 2008, 2012 and 2024, ahead of Germany on three and France, Italy and the Soviet Union further back. No country has won it more often.

The spread of those dates is the interesting part. Spain waited 44 years between the first and the second, then took three in sixteen years with two entirely different squads: the possession side of 2008 and 2012, and the younger, faster team of 2024 that won by attacking rather than by keeping the ball from everyone.

The format, and the rule that shaped it

Twenty-four teams in six groups of four produce twelve automatic qualifiers, which does not fill a round of 16. The four best third-placed teams filled the gap, ranked across all six groups on points, then goal difference, then goals scored.

That rule is why a team could lose two of three group matches and still reach the knockout stage, and it drew the same criticism the 2026 World Cup attracted at larger scale: a group stage where finishing third is frequently survivable is a group stage with less at stake.

Twelve of the twenty-four teams reached the knockout stage, which is half the field. At the 2026 World Cup the same arithmetic sent thirty-two of forty-eight through, and both tournaments drew the same complaint: a group stage most teams survive is a group stage with less riding on it.

Euro 2028 goes to Britain and Ireland

The next tournament runs from 9 June to 9 July 2028, hosted by England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland across nine venues in eight cities. Twenty-four teams again, the same format that produced this tournament.

One decision is worth knowing in advance. The host nations enter qualifying rather than being handed places, drawn into separate groups, and the twelve group winners plus the eight best runners-up go through directly. Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland will have to earn their way into a tournament they are staging, which is not how hosting usually works.
