Reading the round

Rounds fall on Tuesday and Wednesday with a few Thursday fixtures. The eighth and last round is different: all eighteen matches kick off at the same time, because by then one goal can move a club across the play-off line.

Form here counts only finished matches, so a club with a game in hand looks worse than it is. Home and away records matter more than they look in a league this early: two home wins from two says less about a club than the same two results in November will.

Betting on this round

We do not publish odds. Prices move through the week and a number printed on a page is out of date by the time anyone reads it, so what follows is the shape of the round rather than a set of figures.

The fixtures worth a second look are the ones where the table and the form disagree: a club sitting high after a soft opening, or one near the bottom that has played the two hardest away games available. Both get priced on position, and position this early is mostly a function of who they have already faced.
