What the positions meant
The top eight went directly to the round of 16. Ninth to twenty-fourth entered a two-legged knockout play-off for the remaining eight places. Twenty-fifth and below were eliminated from European competition altogether, with no drop into the Europa League.
Each club played eight matches against eight different opponents, drawn two from each of four seeding pots, four at home and four away. There were no groups: this single table decided everything.
