Reading the Primeira Liga table
Eighteen clubs, 34 rounds, three points a win. The top of this table is a three-way argument between Porto, Benfica and Sporting. Everything below it is a race for Europe at one end and for survival at the other, and the two are closer together than the points suggest.
Five Portuguese clubs reach European competition in a normal season, which is a lot for a division of this size and the reason fourth and fifth place are worth fighting for. The exact split moves with who wins the Taca de Portugal, so a cup run in March can rearrange what the league places are worth.
Read the middle of the table with the wage bills in mind. A club finishing fifth on a budget a fraction of Benfica's has done something the standings do not record, and it will usually pay for it the following August when the two players who got it there are sold.
